{"id":344,"date":"2016-11-11T12:18:46","date_gmt":"2016-11-11T11:18:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.adam-research.de\/?p=344"},"modified":"2017-08-19T09:19:56","modified_gmt":"2017-08-19T07:19:56","slug":"temperaturbewusstsein","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adam-research.de\/en\/2016\/11\/temperaturbewusstsein\/","title":{"rendered":"Temperature awareness and thermal integrity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<h4>Why is temperature of printed boards so important?<\/h4>\n<p>Because there are limiting temperatures for operation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Secure maximum operational temperature of components<\/li>\n<li>Glass transition temperature of the board material<\/li>\n<li>Stability of solder joints<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Why should temperature be known as good as possible?<\/h4>\n<p>Because too many items depend on temperature:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Material properties, e.g. electric resistance of traces and thus voltage feed or impedance for transmission of signals<\/li>\n<li>Performance of components<\/li>\n<li>Derating of power for hot ambients needs knowledge of component temperature<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Why don't simplifying spread sheet calculations work?<\/h4>\n<p>Because the local thermal conductivity (the artwork) controls the temperature of a component. It is impossible to include copper patterns, drills and influence from other components in a simple formula, a data sheet or a simple network.
